Arithmetic Race for Kids

Make two lines of students divided however you please, this could be young against old, girls against boys or simply those sitting on the right against those sitting on the left.

The two students standing at the front of lines must listen to an arithmetic equation you come up with and quickly answer it before the opposing student can. If they answer correctly then they can sit down at their desk or wait at the side of the classroom, if they guess incorrectly or are beaten to the correct answer by the opposing student then they have to return to the back of their team’s line and wait for another turn.

Continue the game until one of the teams manages to finish their line with everyone having correctly answered a question. To make the activity run smoothly remind students who are not at the front of the line to remain quiet.

If it goes well you might want to play more than one round, giving students a chance to improve and gain some revenge on the opposing team. You can also introduce a points system where the winning team receives a number of points equal to the number of students remaining in the opposing team’s line.

Use arithmetic questions that suit the level of your class, whether it is simple addition and subtraction or tricky multiplication and division.

Fun Counting Game

Teachers should explain to the class that they will play a simple counting game where the aim is to count from 1 to 40, sounds easy right? Well there are a few twists which make it interesting.

All multiples of 5 should be replaced by a word such as ‘fizz’ (any word you want to use here is fine) and all multiples of 7 should be replaced by the word ‘buzz’ (again, any word you decide to use will be fine). A multiple of both 5 and 7 (i.e. 35) should be replaced by ‘fizz-buzz’ (or a combination of whatever two words you decided to use). Make the students think fast and see if your class can get all the way to 40 without making a mistake.

To make the game a little more difficult you can require that any number featuring a 5 or a 7 (i.e. 17) also require the words ‘fizz’ or ‘buzz’ as a replacement. Trying counting all the way to 100, changing the multiples to something different like 3 and 4 or reversing the order every time ‘fizz’ or ‘buzz’ is said.

The game can also be enjoyed with smaller groups of as little as 3 or 4 students.
Here’s a rundown of how the game should go following the basic rules up to 40:
1, 2, 3, 4, fizz, 6, buzz, 8, 9, fizz, 11, 12, 13, buzz, fizz, 16, 17, 18, 19, fizz, buzz, 22, 23, 24, fizz, 26, 27, buzz, 29, fizz, 31, 32, 33, 34, fizz-buzz, 36, 37, 38, 39, fizz.

    6 x 142857 = 857142

What happens when you multiply it by 7? You get another rather special number:
    7 x 142857 = 999999
    And it doesn't stop there:
    142 + 857 = 999
    14 + 28 + 57 = 99

    142857 x 142857 = 20408122449
    20408 + 122449 = 142857
